Praise Your Children
We should even over do it sometimes. Have you ever noticed how your children react when you tell them how good they are at something? When they are younger, they beam of excitement when we praise them and tell them how happy we are with them or how well they did.
You might forget to praise your children when they get older because they don’t react as much but we need to remember that they still crave it and we need to over do it even sometimes – trust me, they will love it even if they are teenagers and tell you to stop it.
Our story
In any case, today, I want to talk about praising to teach behavior. Our 3 year old is currently going through some phase where she wakes up in the middle of the night and asks to cover her up, or pick up her water or book that fell and stuff like that. My wife has been trying to tell her she’s big enough to do it herself if she wakes up and mommy would be so happy if she let her sleep. When it finally happened, she got all excited in morning and told her how happy she was and how proud she was that she let her sleep… it made one happy little girl there… and she’s been doing it for the last few nights.
Goes to show how powerful praise it. I know it’s not always easy to keep it up, but if we remember how happy our children get from it and we remember that we also get what we want plus super happy children, it makes it easier to remember.
As I mentioned in the video, I’ve listened to a few great audio books over the years such as How to raise happy, healthy, self confident children by Brian Tracy and Building Self-Esteem in Your Child by Susan Baile. I have also heard great review on Children are From Heaven by John Gray which I have yet to get my hands on.
I hope this helped a little and I would love to hear your stories on how you praise your children, please post a comment below.
